In the tumultuous backdrop of World War I, young Ellen Lange escapes her boarding school to seek refuge with her brother Rolf in Kiel. When Rolf, a vice-helmsman, insists she return, Ellen instead journeys to Berlin, finding work at a music store through the assistance of 'Aunt Jenny.' Her life takes a perilous turn when her boss sends her to Copenhagen with a forged passport to deliver a violin hiding secret documents. There, she encounters Erik Larsen, a savvy German secret agent. Driven by guilt over her involvement, Ellen decides to join the secret service, setting off on a path of espionage and redemption.
