In Berlin, Irene Klaussen, a talented and defiant student, develops feelings for her classmate Peter Lemke. Determined to impress him, she attends a school dance in a borrowed dress and later follows him to a challenging year working at a remote oil plant in Granow. Initially shunned, she earns respect by mastering various skills and assisting FDJ secretary Anton with his studies. However, upon returning to Berlin, Irene is heartbroken to learn of Peter's betrayal. Disillusioned, she returns to Granow, where she discovers a true partnership and sense of purpose alongside Anton.
